Not Good

I got home around 9:30pm today from work. My sister told me that I have a message from my doctor that I need to see her tomorrow. So I checked the voicemail. Apparently, I failed the 3 hour glucose test. :(
What does this mean? I have Gestational Diabetes.

What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes (GD) simply means elevated blood sugar during pregnancy. To understand it, you must first understand the normal changes in pregnancy metabolism (34). When you are pregnant, certain hormones make your insulin less effective at transporting glucose, the body’s fuel, out of your bloodstream into your cells. This increases the amount of circulating glucose, making it available to your baby for growth and development. This “insulin resistance” increases as pregnancy advances. As a result, your blood glucose levels after eating rise linearly throughout pregnancy. By the third trimester, you will tend to have higher blood glucose levels after eating than nonpregnant women (hyperglycemia), despite secreting normal and above normal amounts of insulin. During overnight sleep, the excess insulin has a chance to mop up, which causes morning glucose levels to be lower on average than in nonpregnant women (hypoglycemia).

NOTE: GD does not share the risk factors of either type of true diabetes.
The one problem GD shares with both types is that chronic hyperglycemia can overfeed the fetus, resulting in a big baby. This is generally defined as a birth weight of more than 8 lbs. 13 oz.

Anyway...
So I basically have to eat healthier... less sugar and less calories. gheez... i'm losing my 2 best friends... although Protein is one of my closest friend :)

Good luck to me!

I got an F!!!

So I went to the doctor today for another prenatal appointment. They took my weight... And of course.. Gained more weight... Ugh!!! Blood pressure went down, so that's a good sign. Then the nurse did another sonogram. We saw the head, the body, heart beat, legs, and spine. The baby was facing the other way and moving a lot. His head is down on my pelvic area already, which is good and hopefully he'll remain like that most of the time to avoid a breached position.

After that, the doctor came in. She didn't mention about my glucose test 2 weeks ago, so I asked her about the result. She said that if we did not receive a notice that I have to come back for a more extensive test, that means I passed my glucose test. She checked my records and couldn't find the result. She went back to the records room and found my record... And of course... I FAILED!!!! She said it's not that bad. I am just 3 points above the normal level, but I still have to take the 3 hour glucose test. So I have to go back this Saturday. Not eat breakfast, go to the clinic for the test. I cannot eat 8-12 hours prior to the test. I can drink water though. Then I have to drink this horrendous glucose drink an hour before taking my blood, then they will draw my blood every hour for 3 hours after that to check if my blood sugar will go down.

Anyway, the baby is fine... moving a lot!!!!! It's amazing to see my tummy move when he moves. But it is freaky sometimes and I feel like an alien. I do wonder how he looks and how he will be. But I guess I have to be patient because I will have a lifetime to find out.
